How to Keep Your Newborn Safe During a Photoshoot

Babies are our pride and joy, and we want them to be happy and healthy growing up. As parents your main goal is to keep your baby safe, and as professional photographers we want to ensure that your baby will remain safe while working with us. It is important to take safety measures and precautions when working with babies at such a young age. Read our blog on how you can help provide a safe environment for you and your baby during their newborn photoshoot.

Cleanliness is imperative

When you are around babies, especially newborns that are not your own, it’s highly important to be sure to keep a clean environment. This could include anything from constantly washing hands to sanitizing them after touching different pieces of equipment or furniture in the set. You should always keep hand sanitizer around when you take photos of newborns.

Be gentle with them

This step is HUGE when taking photos of newborns. Since most people are aware, you have to cradle and support their head and neck when picking them up, moving them, etc. Since they are so fragile, it’s important for us to be able to get good pictures and handle them properly.

Always get a spotter

What we mean by this is that you should always have a spotter nearby when taking photos of newborns. The only situation where this wouldn’t apply is when you, their parent, are holding your child in the photo. We like to be sure the baby is safe in the position for the picture, but it’s important to have someone on standby to jump in if they start to move around in a way that they could get hurt. The same goes for if you are taking a picture of your newborn and including your family pet. You’ll want to be sure there’s one person available to hold the baby and another to be in charge of managing the pet for everyone’s safety.

Know their limits

Because babies are so fragile, you’ll definitely want to keep in mind the limitations of poses you can do with them. For instance, believe it or not but posing your baby on their stomach in the wrong way could cause them harm if they are there for an extended period of time. Don’t worry, though, leave that to the professionals to dictate the poses in a way that your baby is safe and the photo Instagram-worthy.
