How to Look Good for Your Next Headshot
Headshots: we see them all over LinkedIn, company About Us pages and the like. But have you ever needed to take one? Whether for your business or personal needs, taking a good headshot can seem intimidating. Well, we’re here to tell you some great news – it’s not at all! Now, we know that standing in front of a professional photographer might make you feel less than confident, but the best photographers will help guide you to make you look and feel like a pro.
Confidence is key
Self-confidence is important for headshots. There are many reasons why, here are just a few:
- It will help you feel great, and will help you look great
- It’s the secret receipt that is behind all great headshots
- It allows you to feel calm during your session
- It eliminates any potential negative self-talk
All you have to do to achieve this is to just relax and breathe. Confidence comes easily to people who can focus their minds and take a step back.
Your attire is important
Depending on what kind of headshot you’re getting done, you’ll definitely want to dress the part. Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve probably got a professional headshot coming up. For business professional headshots, it’s all in the name…keep it professional. What does this look like? Maybe a nice blazer and a nice blouse to go with it or something solid colored that is not too distracting – dark colors work perfectly for this! On the other hand, if you’re a business owner, your headshots might look way different, you’ll have more freedom on the style (pro tip: you can keep your outfits both fun AND professional) and color scheme you’ll want to wear.
Don’t overdo the makeup and accessories
While it’s good to have a personal styled look for your photoshoot, it’s also important to keep in mind the makeup, hairstyle and accessories you choose to wear. For women, our appearances sometimes seem more important than they really are. What we mean is you don’t have to wear a ton of makeup just so you can look good in your pictures. Go with something more natural, that way you don’t clash with your outfit or have the makeup be too noticeable in your pictures.
Accessories are very similar, keep it simple. A dainty necklace is usually perfect, but if you like statement pieces, keep it to one that looks good with your outfit.
Smile :)
When taking headshots, feel free to smile! It will calm your nerves a bit and your pics are guaranteed to exude confidence even if you don’t feel the most confident during the session. If you’re nervous, try practicing in front of the mirror or try taking practice headshots with your phone before your shoot. This will help to get all the nerves and inner thoughts to stop, and your pictures will come out more genuine.
