Finding the perfect location for a photoshoot

If you have a photoshoot scheduled soon, you might be asked to choose a location. Not to worry, we have the perfect solution to ease your mind. Photoshoot locations are one of the most, if not THE most important part of your photoshoot. The reason we say this is because that location is going to be a large part of your photos. If you think about it, you’ll want to coordinate the potential props, accessories, and outfits with the location; and we’d hate for one of our customers to choose a location that they did not know at least a little about. This could cause a lot of confusion between you and your photographer of the expectations you had if you are completely unfamiliar with a location. Follow along for helpful tips to solve the photoshoot location choosing process.

If you can visit before, do it!

Remember when we said your expectations could be skewed or it could cause confusion for you and your photographer? Well, when you opt to choose a location and you  don’t  know beforehand any specific spots you’d have in mind, it will likely be a challenge trying to find the day of your shoot. Not only does this potentially waste your time, but it could also end up in choosing somewhere you’re settling for because you couldn’t find anything better. However, if you visit beforehand and get a lay of the land, then you’ll be able to scope out your favorite backgrounds and spots in the location. Looking at the location earlier will also help you plan out your outfits and prepare early to avoid any major hiccups throughout the process.

Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations

By asking for recommendations from your photographer, you’re signaling to them that you’ll trust their judgement. Because the location is a big part of the photoshoot, it’s definitely helpful if someone involved knows their way around. Trust us, a lot of the time, we’ll ask what your outfits look like, and we’ll immediately have an idea in mind of where this would look perfect. So, basically, we’ve likely been to a lot of the scenic spots around town and know where the best shots are taken. You’ll find a lot of photographers’ portfolios can have similar backgrounds and this is usually because we get asked for recommendations.

Be aware that mini sessions might not apply

As professional photographers, If we’ve got a mini session deal going, it is likely going to be at a location most convenient for us. It could be anywhere from a special studio we picked out, to a specific location in a park. It is up to the discretion of the photographer you’re working with, but typically, for a mini session, there’s a pre-determined location. Now, you might wonder why, it’s because with mini sessions, we can have availability for more photoshoots than if we book all full-length sessions all day.
