How to Survive a Family Photoshoot

Planning a family photoshoot is sometimes a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! All the fun pictures you see online can be you and your family too without any hiccups in the process. We all want the happy smiling faces that are part of family photos, and we also want them to be fun for you. Here are some helpful tips that will help you survive your next family photoshoot.

Get Everybody Ready

Getting everyone in your family ready for the photoshoot can look like many different things. Whether it’s getting outfits picked out or convincing your reluctant kids to be excited, the best thing you can do is let them know early on. A fun part of family photoshoots is the planning stage. In this phase, you have all the time until your session to think of fun ideas, locations, outfits, and anything that will make your photoshoot unique and memorable.

Young kids? Bring snacks!

If your kids are younger and still have an undying need for snacks, it’ll likely be helpful to bring some with you. Some good ideas are:

-       Trail mix

-       Granola bars

-       Some fruits – apples, bananas, grapes

-       Cheese snacks – this could look like string cheese or cubes

-       Nuts

Something all these options have in common are that they can’t spill and stain clothes, easily eaten (finger foods) and are easy to store in your bag for a few hours without going bad. This way, if you have snacks, we can take a couple breaks in between so your little ones don’t get upset tummies.

Coordinating outfits, not matching

When taking family photos, our advice would be to coordinate your outfits rather than buying the same thing for everyone. Not only will the pictures be more unique, but it will help everyone still get to have their own style incorporated. Another thing we think works well for family photoshoots is the fact that there’s usually a theme for everyone’s outfits. For example, we could have a family choose to do tan, white and blue as their theme and everyone sticks within those colors when choosing outfits. You could even plan to bring another change of clothes for everyone! Having second outfits can add variety to your picture gallery. Whatever you decide, just be sure your outfits are comfortable for the whole family; because we would hate for someone not to look and feel their best. Staying comfortable in your clothing also helps during the session because you never know exactly which poses you’ll be doing.

Have fun with it!

Do you have a favorite game or activity you all like to do together? That can be part of your family photos! There are so many props and activities you can do for a photoshoot, and plus, it will make the photos even that more personal and special for your family. Keeping the process fun and exciting will help keep everyone happy (and not arguing!). Happiness will not only make the entire photoshoot run much smoother, but it will also translate onto your photos. Trust us, we’ve been doing this for a good amount of time, and we can spot a fake smile from an unhappy kid from a mile away. It’s your family, you’ll appreciate the quality time with each other.
